COPPERCOAT

FREQUENT QUESTIONS

The lifespan of Coppercoat depends on a variety of factors such as water temperature and salt content. However, as a rule of thumb in Northern Europe one should expect effective performance for at least 10 years, while in the Caribbean, 8 to 10 years would be more normal. Many of the first boats to apply Coppercoat in 1991 are still performing well 15 years later! With an average thickness of at least 250 micrometers of Coppercoat application and a typical corrosion rate of less than 5 micrometers per year, it is easy to estimate how long the coating will provide effective protection.

No! Coppercoat is probably the most economical solution to protect a submerged surface from marine microorganisms. With a life of 10 years, the cost of the product alone will usually only be 15 with 30% more than the cost of conventional topcoats which only last a year (depending on the brand you use). The above does not take into account additional costs such as lift, storage, labor costs, inflation, etc., which makes Coppercoat an even more economical solution (why pay to shore up your boat every year if you don't he needs). Compared to using conventional topcoat, customers using Coppercoat pay back within the second year and then enjoy many years of free protection.

Coppercoat is a combination of a specially developed two-component epoxy resin and 99% pure copper. Each liter of Coppercoat contains 2 kg of ultra-fine copper powder, which is the maximum allowed by law. While the vessel is afloat, the seawater "reacts" with the copper particles, causing the copper oxide to form. This particularly strong antiparasitic derivative prevents the growth of microorganisms. When the material breaks down further, it turns into copper hydrochloride. This final stage of the chemical reaction leaves a rather unstable product, which is easily and automatically washed away during the movement of the boat, thus removing the slime from the hull. Thus, a fresh layer of copper appears from below and the
process of "reaction" starts again.

Yes. Coppercoat can be installed on all types of boats, regardless of their size and use. As such, it is sold in both the commercial and recreational sectors. Coppercoat is also available in underwater structures such as tidal turbines.

Designed to be user-friendly, this non-toxic solution should be mixed very well and painted simply, with a roller or spray gun.

To achieve a finish for a boat, 4 thin coats of CopperCoat are sufficient, painting the next while the previous coat is still fresh.

Not with the resin carrier that insulates each copper sphere, the topcoat is inert and non-conductive. Water currents cannot penetrate the Coppercoat and thus cannot cause electrolysis or cathodic breakdown. Therefore, CopperCoat can be safely applied to metal surfaces such as iron and steel propellers, aluminum or the boat (after applying the appropriate epoxy primer).

Yes. Applying Coppercoat to the boat's hull will have no effect on an outboard engine or inboards. As stated in the answer to the previous question, Coppercoat does not cause galvanic corrosion.

When initially applied, Coppercoat takes on a coppery brown color. After launch, Coppercoat oxidizes and takes on the dark green color of copper. The color change process usually takes several months, depending on the water conditions. Due to the large amount of pure copper contained in Coppercoat, it is not possible to produce other colors.

CopperCoat is based on a waterproof resin mixture, which has the effect of protecting the hull against osmosis. The waterproof properties of the Coppercoat resin mixture result in protection, both from moisture that creates osmosis in polyester hulls, and from corrosion in metal ships.

Properly applied CopperCoat will continue to provide protection for many years. The annual chore of staining associated with conventional floor paints is no longer necessary. If, during the months, a slight accumulation of mucus is seen, this can be removed by washing or brushing. An annual washing or brushing is recommended. Usually after several years, a light pass with fine sandpaper would be good to re-expose pure copper.

Yes. Coppercoat is a mixture of pure copper powder and double epoxy resin, which makes it strong and waterproof. After application, you can buff the paint to give it a racing look, which (as the material is non-absorbent) is similar to dry sailing but providing full protection.

No. Unlike most surface paints, CopperCoat is a permanent coating, extremely resistant to abrasion and therefore lifting alone will not cause any damage to the coating.

Yes. The smooth surface that Coppercoat creates helps every boat reach its maximum potential. While traditional coastal paints absorb moisture and harden over time, Copperoat maintains its waterproof and smooth surface. Many boat owners report that after applying Coppercoat, they have seen their boat speed increase. See Sunseeker Middle East's report in the International Press Reviews section for an example.

As Coppercoat is categorized as a non-residue product, it is significantly more environmentally friendly than conventional surface paints. Coppercoat has been tested and is certified by the competent services of Great Britain and the European Union, with certification number HSE 7532, as a material suitable for industrial as well as private use. Coppercoat's packaging does not include metal containers and is fully synchronized with the MEPC.102(48) directive of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Since its introduction 15 years ago, Coppercoat has been the original copper-rich ocean color. As always happens with successful products, some tried to copy Coppercoat during this time. Despite their glowing statements, companies that tried to create something similar (such as Cupro FF, CopperGuard, Cu17, Halcyon 5000, Copperbot 2000, Cop-R-poxy, etc.) all failed and discontinued the products their. Coppercoat is the only one of its kind since 1991 that appeared on the market and is the only one that has proven (not theoretical) proof that the service life is more than 10 years. The above explains why over 30,000 customers in over 40 countries use Coppercoat.
